Once the Canadian forces completed their mission of liberating the Netherlands, they began pushing into Germany and joined the other Allied countries in the invasion. Hitler was well aware that the fall of Berlin was inevitable, but he ordered that his soldiers, who most of which were now untrained children and elderly men, continue to fight against the Soviets. The tyrant then recieved the news that his idol, Benito Mussolini, was dead, and that his body had been dragged throughout the streets of Milan and spat on. Hitler was devastated, and terrified that the same would happen to him, so on April 30th, 1945, Hitler committed suicide with his wife, Eva, and beloved dog, Blondi. Hitler also ordered that their bodies be burned as a protective measure, as not to let his body fall into the hand's of the enemy.
Once the Germans discovered Hitler was dead, a cease-fire was announced, and on May 7th, 1945, Germany surrendered to the Allies unconditionally. The Allies proclaimed victory and labelled May 8th as Victory in Europe Day (VE Day). Finally, after years of fighting, the catastrophic war in Europe was over.
